Guesthouse Soup

Guesthouse Soup is made up of what we have in left overs, soooo, it’s never the same.
Today’s soup is onions, cauliflower, a left over bag of coleslaw mix , broccoli, cherry tomatoes, celery, pearl barley, two cans diced tomatoes, about a litre of beef soup stock, gravy works and a pound of hamburger.
  • Brown the meat in a skillet and add some garlic and salt and pepper
  • In the soup pot, add the rest of the goodies sautéed in a gob of butter, except the cans of tomatoes (they have to be opened first).
  • Drain & add the meat to the pot, open the tomatoes and toss ’em in.
  • Add water to about 3 inches from the pots top, then add the barley,
  • Cover, bring to a boil, stir occasionally, then reduce to low covered.
  • Grab some of the donated bread, butter it & throw it in the oven to brown.
There is generally a two bowl minimum, from our guests, so it works.

This one is very simple:
4 cans diced tomatoes
3 litres of milk
¼ cup baking soda
salt
pepper
1 Spanish onion
butter
  • Sauté the butter and onion
  • Next add tomatoes
  • Now this is kind of important: add baking soda, mix well
  • Now add milk
  • Season to taste
  • If you like, some noodles cooked on the side
  • Some sort of bread
